__________________________UPDATE 6/3/09: I am downgrading this to 2 stars. Many thanks to that wonderful poster on the Neoseeker website (username: R_E_A_P) who gave this tip. Luckily, I have Windows XP on another computer. Hold down the A and B buttons, turn on the DS and then push the select and start buttons (those two at the top of the of each edge of the DS) all at the same time (as soon as it turns on).
It has no troubleshooting section and only one question listed in its FAQ. The software said I did not have enough memory even though the cartridge was empty. There is a page posted on the Neoseeker website by someone named Vermillion detailing installation and setup that is much easier to follow. There are illustrations of different screens but the buttons on the screens are merely referred to but not identified. There, it's reset. Once more, I checked online for some tips.
However, I could not get the Action Replay cartridge to load the games. Then, I read online that Replay wasn't compatible with Vista. I'm told his friend is on it everyday; and my son would be, too, if I let him. The box says it's compatible with Windows Vista, but I couldn't get the code manager software to recognize the DS. It is not abundantly clear to me that the asterisk at the bottom of the screen is the select button, nor could I tell from the illustration what the pencil icon was for.
Here is the tip: turn off the DS. In fact, I inserted it and turned on the DS to find his screen stuck on the warning that the product is not licensed or endorsed by Nintendo. Throughout it all, I have to say the manual is just horrible. My son bought this with his birthday money. Okay, now that all is said and done, my son loves his Action Replay. So does his friend (I got his friend one for his birthday). If only it was easier to set up, I'd give it a full 5 stars.
Because setup was a headache and it came with poorly written instructions, I'll give it 3 stars. Pushing A+B+select+start doesn't work. On XP, the software recognized the DS. I am returning this tomorrow. I am grateful. I'm usually good at deciphering manuals, but this one lead me on a convoluted journey here and there. My son complains that his Action Replay no longer works.
Apparently, his friend got more use out of it, so I will downgrade it to 2 stars for unpredictably being unplayable.
My 7 year old son says that he likes it but that some of the "cheats" for Pokemon Platinum don't work.
:)Try resetting the Action Replay by following these steps:Insert the Action Replay into the DS While the Action Replay software is loading, press and hold all the following buttons: A + B + Start + Select. I told my son about it but the first thing he did was the quick update and wipe everything out. Be really careful not to do the "quick update" as stated in earlier reviews. Release all of the buttons once the Action Replay is at the main menu. I did the following steps and it worked fine. This has been the most excited I've seen my son in a long time. The first screen should persist for much longer than normal, and when the Action Replay DS main menu loads, your hardware should be reset.Once the reset has been performed, try connecting the USB cable to your PC, opening up the code manager software and transferring data again. It won't return all of your games back, but it will allow you to start on a clean slate again.
Yes this product works very well, it helped me beat my game in the few days it took me to fly from Spokane Washington where I'm stationed to my deployed location over in the Middle East, where I am at right now. Air Force >< so I'm a bit ahead of the game when it comes to being computer savvy. I love this product, and if other people would learn to read to see what they need to do, then they would too. Although I have an unfair advantage, I work on computers for a living for the U.S. But really, even my mother who knowns NOTHING about computers was able to work this thing for my sisters kids. It's not that hard people, just quite being stupid and read what you have to do to get it to work.
My son is very happy with this game adapter. It is what he was expecting
